Lewis & Clark:

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark embarked in May of 1840 on a mission to map the northwest. They traveled up the Missouri, wintering in North Dakota with the Mandan before continuing on across the Rocky Mountains and out the Columbia River to the Pacific. After more than two and a quarter years they returned to St. Louis where their accounts lent great credibility to the claims over the Northwest territories levied by President Thomas Jefferson's government.
