Discovered by Dr. Thomas Walker in seventeen fifty, this notch in the eastern escarpment of the Cumberland Mountains where Virginia Kentucky and Tennessee join borders at about sixteen hundred feet. This was one of the three major early routes to the west across the Appalachian Mountains. Known by thousands of travelers as the Wilderness Road, it was a main line on the way to Kentucky and Tennessee.
